Each week, your friends at Mastersball will post the results of the weekly LABR FAAB run, featuring the winning bid as well a the runner-up bids. There are three LABR leagues, a 12-team AL only, 13-team NL only and 15-team Mixed League. You can see the complete standings for each league by clicking on the appropriate heading, located just under each player photo. Included with each league report will be commentary from a Mastersball staff member participating in that league. We invite you to ask questions and post comments at the bottom of the report. All contingency bids for awarded players are included. Sometimes, this bid is tied to a player that the owner received, so at times the bid amount is larger than the winning bid. We are including it to provide as much information and context as possible with each report.

Perry Van Hook's Commentary Well my inability to compete for the high dollar crossover players last week is going to land me Manny Machado this week as I use the most FAAB to roster him. It is even more important for my team than just adding a player because he will take the spot of Brett Lawrie who is now on the disabled list. My $20 bid will be a tie with Brad Evans (Yahoo) but since Brad is one of the few teams ahead of me in the league I will win the tie and still have $3 for the balance of the season. When there is a player with the upside of a Machado you go for it if you have a chance. That said I don’t expect future weeks to be as good as last week but I will take whatever he can add to my offense. The results? I’m not sure whether to use either disappointing or irritating after getting the best available player, but Evans apparently didn’t bid on Machado and I could have gotten him for half of what I did bid – of course in that alternate universe he bids $20 (or close) and I lose a player I needed to add. Just keep hitting Manny. The rest of the players added were all for a dollar or two and were some not so great pitchers or marginal hitters – but that is the free agent pool in the dog days of August.

Lawr Michaels' Commentary Desperate times, desperate measures?Perhaps, but it is getting to be that time of the season, especially for the NL LABR participants (which no longer seem to include me thanks to now five active position players joining the other six already limping around, nursing injuries on the DL). The big name this week was, however a call up with the Brewers Jean Segura, part of the Zack Greinke trade spoils at the deadline. ESPN's Tristan Cockcroft nabbed the up-and-coming shortstop for $20, a pretty good buy this time of the year. Next on the money list were Jim Henderson, the new closing flavor of the week in Milwaukee costing the BBHQ sqaud $18 in some hopes of saves, and Dale Thayer, also $18, and also to BBHQ. After that, the crap-shoot likes of Clint Barmes ($3 to Rick Wolf and Glenn Colton at Full Moon), Tyler Greene ($5 to BP wizard Derek Carty) and starting pitcher Mark Rogers ($7 to pack leader Steve Moyer of Business Info Solutions) were the pickups of note this week.

Todd Zola's Commentary The guys at Razzball won the Manny Machado sweepstakes, acquiring the uber-prospect for the stretch drive. The three homers aside, Machado is a high risk, high reward proposition, but that is exactly what you need to use if you need to make up ground in win or go home leagues. Bobby Colton picked up a couple of possible sources of saves in Jeremy Affeldt and Dale Thayer, but curiously did not bid on Jim Henderson, who appears to be the guy in Milwaukee. The conundrum that is pitching. If you are in the group that likes to wait and pick up reinforcement in season, enjoy your choices like Patrick Corbin, Jeremy Guthrie, Hisashi Iwakuma, Franklin Morales, Chris Volstad, Kevin Correia, Wade LeBlanc and Miguel Gonzalez. Fools - you should have done what I did and DRAFT pitching! I snagged Felix Hernandez in the third round - what a steal! And then backed him up with Jon Lester, Ricky Romero and Justin Masterson. Man, do I feel foolish. |
