Sunday 28th May 2017

Keep trusting the process. That is my message after a losing Week 14 for me. I have consciously tried as this season has gone on to avoid the urge to tinker with my lineup. Sure, I considered swapping out Ryan Fitzpatrick, T.J. Yeldon, Delanie Walker and the Browns defense for Ben Roethlisberger, DeAngelo Williams, Austin Seferian-Jenkins and the Seahawks defense. But I was able to avoid the temptation.

I went back and forth all week on Vincent Jackson vs. Doug Baldwin, both priced at $4,500. I liked V-Jax a little more from the outset, expecting and up and down battle against the Saints while the expectation was for the Seahawks to get a big lead and run the clock to grind out the game. Even during the week when I heard V-Jax was battling a knee injury, I stuck with him when he was declared active on Sunday. Well, that cost me 31 points and a virtual guaranteed score above the payline.

With only Danny Amendola left on my roster at flex and being below the pay line, I correctly figured that there was no way to move above the cash line with Amendola’s ownership expected to be around 50%. So I had just enough money to go from Amendola to Lamar Miller. I felt like a genius at halftime on Monday night when Miller had scored two touchdowns to move me above the cash line.

My big fear then turned to the high ownership on Odell Beckham Jr. While the ownership was near 50%, all I really needed in the second half was for Beckham to not go bonkers and for the Dolphins to keep giving Miller a chance to run. Someone needs to explain how the Dolphins could go almost exclusive pass in the second half (Miller had five carries), leading to more opportunity for Beckham. We know that the Dolphins forgot to cover him on the 84-yard catch (just a minor mix-up) and the rest is history.

But somehow on Tuesday morning, in spite of losing, I didn’t feel as bad as I did after the early games on Sunday. My brain really hurt for messing up the V-Jax-Baldwin call, but I felt at least I played the end game correctly in getting off Amendola and on to Miller (even though the Dolphins refused to cooperate).

If they can contain Beckham, they can get some points

Rostering Allen Robinson and Brandon Marshall paid off for me last week. So where do we go in Week 14?

The problem this week is that the cheap running backs all went up in price. If you want at least two high-priced wide receivers, you are left with Shaun Draughn at $4800 and T.J. Yeldon at $4900. Now on Wednesday, we are hit with the dilemma of Saints running back Mark Ingram going on IR, leaving C.J. Spiller ($3000) as the lead back. Maybe in GPP, but I am not touching him in cash games.

Going with Draughn and Yeldon will allow us to roster Antonio Brown and Brandon Marshall at WR and Delanie Walker at TE.

We are in the mode of hitting a formula that has worked, so we are sticking with it. Cheap at QB and RB, paying up for WR and TE, playing the same cash games, primarily single entry $5 and $10 contests.

QUARTERBACK
Tom Brady NE 7800 At least 23 in all but two games. Doing it with mirrors
Cam Newton Car 7500 Wow. Now very pricy after 5 TD passes in two of past three

Brock Osweiler Den 5200 Might get the chains off if Oakland can score some points
RUNNING BACK
Matt Forte Chi 6800 Langford and now Carey near goal line pose a risk

Happy Thanksgiving! The good news is the byes are over! However, due to the extended Turkey Day slate, we're still working with less than the full complement of games. We're also at the time of the year where the elements can come into play. There have been a lot of studies done with respect to how weather impacts scoring and the overwhelming factor is wind. Unless the rain, snow or cold is extreme, the influence is minimial. However, once wind is in the picture, scoring goes down. This may afford the ability to get exposure to a player not many will risk or perhaps stay on a cash game play that others needlessly avoid.

With all the back-up running backs gaining starting jobs, Week 13 is a great week to go cheap on running back and pay up for the star wide receivers - again.

That strategy failed the players that went top-tier in Week 12 as Julio Jones, DeAndre Hopkins and Antonio Brown all flopped relative to their price. Only Odell Beckham played to his price. You don’t have to go quite that high. If you can roster some combination of Larry Fitzgerald, Allen Robinson, Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, you are likely to be gold in cash games this week.

After 12 weeks, I finally think I am getting the hang of NFL DFS cash games and money management. Up through Week 11, I had been playing 75% cash and 25% GPP with relatively small bankroll and a single lineup. What I found was that with this split, even when I had a good cash week, I was not making enough money to offset the bad week. As much as we want to with the $1 million prize (my goal in fantasy sports is to get my picture taken holding one of those big checks), we need to take baby steps to get there.

Two weeks in a row. We have figured out how to cash two weeks in a row. But the second week was very different than the first. In Week 9, we cashed scoring 210 with a cut line over 170. In Week 10, we cashed scoring 126. Just goes to show the week-to-week variance and prove that every week is a new game.

Week 11 is the week of the cheap wide receivers. Whereas last week was tough to choose running backs, I see match-ups this week that have me interested in many lower-priced wide receivers. I can see entering a lineup with three from the group of Kamar Aiken, Donte Moncrief, Davante Adams, Brandon LaFell, Danny Amendola, Steve Johnson and Chris Givens and then using the money on high-priced players at Quarterback and Running Back.

Lesson learned for last week – Stay with the flow on high-ownership guys in cash games and find the low-ownership players to pepper into your GPP lineup. I never should have played a GPP lineup last week with DeAngelo Williams, Todd Gurley, Darren McFadden or James Starks. The teams that were in contention for the top GPP prizes went against the grain with Jeremy Langford against the Rams and Charcandrick West against the Broncos.
