Each week, your friends at Mastersball will post the results of the weekly Tout Wars FAAB run, featuring the winning bid as well as the runner-up bids. There are four Tout Wars leagues, a 12-team AL only, 12-team NL only, 15-team Mixed Auction League and 15-team Mixed Draft League. The Mixed leagues use on-base-percentage instead of batting average. You can see the complete standings for each league by clicking on the appropriate heading, located just under each player photo.
Tout Wars uses a Vickrey system to award bids. For a complete description of the Vickrey system, click HERE for the Tout Wars constitution.
Included with each league report will be commentary from a Mastersball staff member participating in that league. We invite you to ask questions and post comments at the bottom of the report.
All contingency bids for awarded players are included. Sometimes, this is a bid tied to a player that the owner received, so at times the bid amount is larger than the winning bid. We are including it to provide as much information and context as possible with each report.

Rob Leibowitz' Commentary
Flyers are the theme of the week and it is a fair bet most of these pitchers are available in your local deep AL only league too.
The FAAB action saw speculative bids on pitchers like Bruce Chen, Jordan Lyles, Jake Odorizzi, Jerome Wililams, Kyle Gibson, and Ricky Romero. Chen, 36, has pitched well in relief with 11 K’s and 1 walked allowed in 9.7 innings. There is always a chance he could slide back into the rotation or at least pick up a few spot starts, particularly if Luis Mendoza continues to struggle.
Lyles pitched well in his season debut over the weekend. The 22-year old had been struggling in Triple-A, but has at least still been showing pretty good control, four fairly solid pitches, and while he does not have a tremendously high ceiling, Lyles could emerge as a middle of the rotation type and has the potential to stick in the rotation for the remainder of the season.
Jerome Williams is a get shot to fill in for Jered Weaver who is expected back just before Memorial Day weekend. Williams had been pitching fairly well until yesterday including his previous start and could receive 4 or 5 additional starts while Weaver is out. Williams has pretty good control, keeps the ball on the ground, and has some strikeout skills, but also has a history with poor command in the zone and allowing the longball, so expect some ups and downs like his first two starts.
Romero was mediocre in his return to the rotation with the Blue Jays and ended up requiring x-rays on his left forearm after the start. While the results were negative, Romero could still miss his next start and given that mechanical/control issues were at the crux of Romero’s struggles last season, a forearm/elbow problem could only exacerbate the situation. I would keep him on reserve at best for the time being.
Odorizzi and Gibson are minor leaguers pushing for rotation spots. Like Lyles neither pitcher projects as an ace, but do profile well as competent middle of the rotation types given a good combination of skills, deep repertoires, and command. Odorizzi has an avenue through the struggling Roberto Hernandez in Tampa Bay. Gibson, who is coming back from Tommy John surgery, has multiple avenues given the Twins’ rotation-full of stop-gap types. Both are very good speculative plays for later in the season, with an edge to Gibson given the greater number of potential opportunities.

Brian Walton's Commentary
Another week, another bidding war for a new call up. Miami outfielder Marcell Ozuna made the jump from Double-A out of necessity. Giancarlo Stanton was just heating up before his hamstring popped. In bidding for Ozuna this week, key considerations are how long Stanton may be out and after he returns, if he will be traded. My $34 bid was second-best as winner Phil Hertz of Baseball HQ was willing to go as much as $59, reduced to $35 by Vickrey.
Through five starts, oft-disappointing Scott Feldman has been quite the opposite for the Cubs this season. I went $3 in hopes the wind is not blowing out in his future starts at Wrigley Field. I again price enforced for the winner, Yahoo's Scott Pianowski, who offered $11 (Vickrey reduced to $4). I had already planned to bid on hard-throwing Carlos Martinez of the Cardinals before he was a surprise elevation from Double-A to replace disappointing Mitchell Boggs. The club's previous closer is now in Triple-A. Martinez might get a shot at the job later, but even if not, the 21-year-old should be a good source of strikeouts. His promotion blew my chance for a stealth move, as my $3 came in a distant fourth. Hertz was again the winner, with his $26 bid lowered to $9 by Vickrey. Speaking of the Cardinals, there is guarded optimism out of St. Louis that 38-year-old Chris Carpenter might be able to return in the second half as a reliever. His career was thought to be over due to thoracic outlet syndrome, but if anyone can make it back, it would be the 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner. I was willing to bet $1 to find out and actually won this time.

Zach Steinhorn's Commentary
After failing to stick around in the Majors through the entire 2012 season due to poor hitting, Dee Gordon will now get another chance thanks to Hanley Ramirez’s return trip to the DL. So far, Gordon is making the most of the opportunity, going 3-for-7 with three steals over two games. While his speed is top-notch, it remains to be seen if Gordon can get on base enough to avoid being sent back down once Ramirez comes back. But for fantasy purposes, since steals is a category, Gordon instantly carries plenty of value. Seth Trachtman valued him at a whopping 70 FAAB dollars but was fortunately able to get him for “only” 30 bucks. Seth ranks in the bottom half of the league in swipes but the distribution is still very bunched up, so he could potentially gain a lot of ground very quickly.
Coming off a disastrous pitching week, probably my worst ever pitching week in over a decade of playing fantasy baseball, I seriously considered putting in a claim for Hector Santiago, who has taken over the injured Gavin Floyd’s spot in the White Sox rotation. But perhaps psychologically drained from the past week, I opted against it. So far, Santiago has had one strong outing and one shaky performance, but I do like the strikeout upside. In the end though, I would not have bid more than a few bucks, so I would not have gotten him anyway. I think he can turn out to be a nice pickup.

Perry Van Hook's Commentary
There were two very desirable new free agents for the mixed draft league participants to weigh in their FAAB bids yesterday (for my analysis please see the new Captain’s Log on Wednesday at Mastersball).
Dee Gordon, SS, LAD would potentially add many stolen bases and/or fill a weak or disabled MI slot for some players, while Marcell Ozuna, OF, MIA would add some power for those with a weak OF or UT slot. There were eight bids on Gordon, and certainly we can see why Mike Podhorzer would want to bid $38 to replace Alex Gonzalez, but Ray Guilfoyle has Hanley Ramirez with a greater need and bid $50 which was reduced to $39 to top Mike.
Surprisingly there were only two bids on Ozuna, $27 from Tom Kessenich who wanted to release Travis Snider, but not as much as I wanted to release Fernando Martinez so my $37 bid was reduced to $28. I also wanted to add Brewers starter Hiram Burgos despite his start at Great American Smallpark this week and was pleasantly surprised that I was the only bidder and thus had to lose only one dollar of FAAB and not the entire $11 I had bid. Fortunately even if Burgos has a tough outing he will be valuable in later weeks and my league leading ERA and WHIP can cover him.
